Position Title: Programmer/Analyst I
Department/Unit: Management Information Services
College/Admin. Office: Information Technologies
Location: Newark
Title of Supervisor: Associate Director or Manager
Level: 11

Context of Job: Management Information Services (MIS) provides application analysis, design and development support for all core business systems. This includes client/server and mainframe computing utilizing Unix and MVS operating systems, the World-Wide Web and programs and scripts written in COBOL, Natural, C, C++, Java, Javascript, HTML and PERL. MIS is one of several groups within the larger organization of Information Technologies(IT). Academic and Administrative units across campus rely on MIS for the provision of business system design and support services.

The Programmer/Analyst family supports the core business computing systems by participating in the needs analysis, specification, acquisition, design, development and maintenance of application software and associated hardware. They report to the Associate Director or Manager. The Programmer/Analyst family includes a progression of five steps from entry level (Programmer/Analyst I) to the most senior level (Project Leader II). New members to the Programmer/Analyst family will be hired into levels that are commensurate with their experience and educational background. Incumbents can progress to higher levels as their on-the-job experience and skill levels increase over time.

Major Responsibilities:

  1. Assist with analysis and provide programming services to modify existing programs and write new programs.
  2. Participate in the testing of programs and systems to help ensure they work.
  3. Provide user support.
  4. Assist in maintaining the daily production schedule of core business systems.
  5. Develop a general familiarity with a subset of the business systems of the institution.
  6. Learn a variety of languages and utilities.
  7. Attend internal and external training programs.
  8. Establish and maintain appropriate working relationships with colleagues and users and follow University policies and procedures.
Qualifications: Education level and experience typically associated with Bachelor's degree and one year of related work experience or Associate's degree and three years related work experience required.

Qualifications: Education level typically associated with Master's degree and five years related experience required or a minimum tenure of two years in the rank of Programmer/Analyst IV. A degree in Computer Science or Business is highly desirable.
