Position Title: Database Administrator I
Department/Unit: Management Information Services

Context of Job: Management Information Services (MIS) provides application analysis, design and development support for all core business systems. This includes client/server and mainframe computing utilizing Unix and MVS operating systems, the World-Wide Web and systems using SQL, Oracle, ADABAS and MS SQL-Server databases. MIS is one of several groups within the larger organization of Information Technologies (IT). Academic and Administrative units across campus rely on MIS for the provision of business system design and support services.
Database Administrators support the core business computing systems by participating in the needs analysis, specification, acquisition, design, development and maintenance institutional databases. They report to the Associate Director or Manager. The Data Administration family includes a progression of three steps from entry level (Database Administrator I) to the most senior level (Supervisor, Data Administration). Database Administrators will be hired into levels that are commensurate with their experience and educational background. Incumbents can progress to higher levels as their on-the-job experience and skill levels increase over time.

Major Responsibilities:

  1. Provide business systems analysis and database design services to modify existing databases and develop new databases.
  2. Participate in the design of data models and data structures.
  3. Provide user support, consulting with user groups to determine data needs, providing training and assisting with help-line support related to institutional data models.
  4. Provide production support of several institutional databases.
  5. Develop an expert-level understanding of the business systems of the institution and their associated data requirements.
  6. Learn a variety of database design methods, security procedures and utilities. Participate in external training programs and provide instruction for internal training programs.
  7. Establish and maintain appropriate working relationships with colleagues and users and follow University policies and procedures governing IT efforts.
Qualifications: Requires a bachelor's degree plus two years effective experience or equivalent educational background and experience or a minimum tenure of two years in the rank of Programmer/Analyst II. A degree in Computer Science or Business is desirable. Experience should include a working knowledge of business systems principals and database design experience outside of the classroom.

  1. Supervise business systems design, analysis and database design projects to modify existing systems and develop new systems.
  2. Supervise the design of institutional data models and data structures.
  3. Develop database-related software "Request for Proposal" specification documents.
  4. Facilitate database design meetings and document outcomes.
  5. Maintain overall responsibility for the proper operation of institutional databases.
  6. Provide expert database and data administration advice to a variety of IT staff members.
  7. Develop an advanced understanding of business systems architecture and related database design. Direct internal training programs relating to data administration.
  8. Oversee many aspects of the installation, maintenance and support of critical database resources.
  9. Establish and maintain appropriate working relationships with colleagues and users and follow University policies and procedures governing IT efforts.
Qualifications: Requires a bachelor's degree with six or more years effective experience or a master's degree with four years effective experience or equivalent educational background and experience or a minimum tenure of two years in the rank of Programmer/Analyst IV.
