Position Title: Web Developer I
Department/Unit: IT Web Development

Context of Job: The IT Web Development Department is responsible for the specifications, development and implementation of institution-wide web-based information services that support the University's core business processes. The unit provides process design and development services to both administrative and academic clients, maintaining significant responsibility for and impact upon the development of new and improved campus business systems.

The Web Developer assesses, designs, creates, tests, implements, and maintains web applications for the University. The incumbent acts as a liaison working with campus clients and IT technical groups regarding needs analysis and web application creation. The Web Developer typically works on multiple dead-line driven projects of varying complexity at any given time and many applications have high-visibility on and off campus.

The Web Developer family includes a progression of five steps from entry level (Web Developer I) to the most senior level (Project Leader II). New members to the Web Developer family will be hired into levels that are commensurate with their experience and educational background. Incumbents can progress to higher levels as their responsibilities, on-the-job experience and skill levels increase over time.

The Web Developer reports to the Manager of Web Resource Group.

Major Responsibilities:

  1. Assists with the analysis, design, development, and support Web-based information systems. Learns to visualize concepts, and identify and understand both business and client needs.
  2. Contributes to the creation of user interfaces for self-service and customer-friendly departmental systems focusing on web accessibility, usability, and functionality. Learns to document functional requirements and application behavior.
  3. Assists in performing quality assurance for implementation of new web applications and for changes to existing applications including browser, platform, and functional testing and debugging.
  4. Learns about and uses a variety of Web development tools, methods, and products.
  5. Develops a general familiarity with the many business systems of the institution and associated technologies.
  6. Participates as member of team working collaboratively with campus clients and IT staff to develop or acquire business systems solutions.
  7. Assists in supporting acquired web solutions used centrally on campus.
  8. Establishes and maintains appropriate working relationships with colleagues and clients. Follows University policies and procedures governing IT efforts.
  9. Attends internal and external training programs.
  10. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: Bachelor's degree with one year related experience or an associate's degree with three years related experience. A degree in Management Information Systems, Computer Information Sciences with concentration in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), or Visual Communications or related discipline is preferred.

Website design, form design and familiarity with business systems processes outside of the classroom. Familiarity with web standards, accessibility, usability, HTML, and CSS required. Requires the ability to write HTML code, and interpret and edit javascript. Cross platform (Mac and PC) experience and a working knowledge of Dreamweaver and Photoshop or equivalent preferred. Effective communication and organization skills. Ability to manage multiple projects and be detail oriented.

  4. Uses a variety of Web development tools, methods, and products and evaluates them for potential use in the campus environment.
  5. Develops an increasing familiarity with the many business systems of the institution and associated technologies.
  6. Collaborates with campus clients and IT staff to develop or acquire business systems solutions. May be primary liaison between these two groups.
  7. Assists in supporting acquired web solutions used centrally on campus.
  8. Establishes and maintains appropriate working relationships with colleagues and clients. Follows University policies and procedures governing IT efforts.
  9. Participates in internal and external training programs.
  10. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: Bachelor's degree with two years related experience or an associate's degree with four years related experience. A degree in Management Information Systems, Computer Information Sciences with concentration in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), or Visual Communications or related discipline is preferred.

Experience should include designing and documenting web-based applications, plus a working knowledge of business systems processes outside of the classroom. Demonstrated ability to translate business requirements into meaningful interactive experiences. Knowledge of web standards, accessibility, usability, HTML, and CSS and cross platform (Mac and PC) experience required. Requires the ability to write HTML code, and to write and edit javascript. Dreamweaver and Photoshop or equivalent experience preferred. Requires excellent communication skills (oral, written, listening, presentation) and organization skills. Must be able to manage multiple projects and be detail oriented. A desire to learn new skills is crucial to success in this role.

  5. Develops an expert level knowledge of the business systems of the institution and associated technologies.
  6. Collaborates with campus clients and IT staff to develop or acquire business systems solutions. Is the primary liaison between these two groups.
  7. Supports acquired web solutions used centrally on campus.
  8. Assists junior level team members with their work.
  9. Establishes and maintains appropriate working relationships with colleagues and clients. Follows University policies and procedures governing IT efforts.
  10. Participates in and conducts internal and external training programs.
  11. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: Bachelor's degree with three years related experience or an associate's degree with five years related experience. A degree in Management Information Systems, Computer Information Sciences with concentration in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), or Visual Communications or related discipline is preferred.

Experience in designing and documenting complex or large-scale web-based applications, plus proficiency in business systems processes outside of the classroom. Demonstrated expertise in translating business requirements into meaningful interactive experiences. Knowledge of web standards, accessibility, usability, HTML, CSS, W3C validated XHTML, Dreamweaver and Photoshop, or equivalent, experience required. Requires cross platform (Mac and PC) experience and the ability to write HTML code and to write and edit javascript. Requires excellent communication skills (oral, written, listening, presentation) and organization skills. Must be able to manage multiple projects and be detail oriented. A desire to learn new skills is crucial to success in this role.

Context of Job: Management Information Services (MIS) provides application analysis, design and development support for all core business systems. This includes client/server and mainframe computing utilizing Unix and MVS operating systems, the World-Wide Web and programs and scripts written in COBOL, Natural, C, C++, Java, Javascript, HTML and PERL. MIS is one of several groups within the larger organization of Information Technologies (IT). Academic and Administrative units across campus rely on MIS for the provision of business system design and support services.

The Web Developer family supports campus business processes by participating in the needs analysis, specification, acquisition, design, development and maintenance of Web-based information services. They report to the Associate Director or Manager, MIS. The Web Developer family includes a progression of five steps from entry level (Web Developer I) to the most senior level (Project Leader II). New members to the Web Developer family will be hired into levels that are commensurate with their experience and educational background. Incumbents can progress to higher levels as their responsibilities, on-the-job experience and skill levels increase over time.

Major Responsibilities:

  1. Direct business systems design, analysis and Web development projects to modify existing write new systems.
  2. Oversee the design of user interfaces for self-service, customer-service and departmental systems.
  3. Determine and specify user needs, prototype and document these needs.
  4. Direct complex business process reviews and document business process standards.
  5. Develop an expertise in many business systems of the institution and associated technologies.
  6. Master a variety of tools, operating systems, security procedures and utilities.
  7. Provide instruction for internal training programs.
  8. Assist more junior level Web Developers with the solution of complex business problems.
  9. Establish and maintain appropriate working relationships with colleagues and users and follow University policies and procedures governing IT efforts.
Qualifications: Requires a bachelor's degree with four years effective experience or a master's degree with two years effective experience or equivalent educational background and experience or a minimum tenure of two years in the rank of Web Developer III. A degree in Computer Science, Graphics Art or Business is highly desirable. Experience should include a thorough knowledge of business systems principals and in-depth Web development experience outside of the classroom.

  8. Oversee junior level Web Developers working to solve complex business problems.
  9. Establish and maintain appropriate working relationships with colleagues and users and follow University policies and procedures governing IT efforts.
Qualifications: Requires a bachelor's degree with six or more years effective experience or a master's degree with four years effective experience or equivalent educational background and experience or a minimum tenure of two years in the rank of Project Leader I. A degree in Computer Science, Graphics Art or Business is highly desirable.
