Position Title: Web Developer I

Context of Job: The IT Web Development Department is responsible for the specifications, development and implementation of institution-wide web-based information services that support the University's core business processes. The unit provides process design and development services to both administrative and academic clients, maintaining significant responsibility for and impact upon the development of new and improved campus business systems.

The Web Developer assesses, designs, creates, tests, implements, and maintains web applications for the University. The incumbent acts as a liaison working with campus clients and IT technical groups regarding needs analysis and web application creation. The Web Developer typically works on multiple dead-line driven projects of varying complexity at any given time and many applications have high-visibility on and off campus.

The Web Developer family includes a progression of five steps from entry level (Web Developer I) to the most senior level (Project Leader II). New members to the Web Developer family will be hired into levels that are commensurate with their experience and educational background. Incumbents can progress to higher levels as their responsibilities, on-the-job experience and skill levels increase over time.

The Web Developer reports to the Manager of Web Resource Group.

Major Responsibilities:

1. Assists with the analysis, design, development, and support Web-based information systems. Learns to visualize concepts, and identify and understand both business and client needs.
2. Contributes to the creation of user interfaces for self-service and customer-friendly departmental systems focusing on web accessibility, usability, and functionality. Learns to document functional requirements and application behavior.
3. Assists in performing quality assurance for implementation of new web applications and for changes to existing applications including browser, platform, and functional testing and debugging.
4. Learns about and uses a variety of Web development tools, methods, and products.
5. Develops a general familiarity with the many business systems of the institution and associated technologies.
6. Participates as member of team working collaboratively with campus clients and IT staff to develop or acquire business systems solutions.
7. Assists in supporting acquired web solutions used centrally on campus.
8. Establishes and maintains appropriate working relationships with colleagues and clients. Follows University policies and procedures governing IT efforts.
9. Attends internal and external training programs.
10. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: Bachelor's degree with one year related experience or an associate's degree with three years related experience. A degree in Management Information Systems, Computer Information Sciences with concentration in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), or Visual Communications or related discipline is preferred.

Website design, form design and familiarity with business systems processes outside of the classroom. Familiarity with web standards, accessibility, usability, HTML, and CSS required. Requires the ability to write HTML code, and interpret and edit javascript. Cross platform (Mac and PC) experience and a working knowledge of Dreamweaver and Photoshop or equivalent preferred. Effective communication and organization skills. Ability to manage multiple projects and be detail oriented.

Demonstrated ability to translate business requirements into meaningful interactive experiences. Knowledge of web standards, accessibility, usability, HTML, and CSS and cross platform (Mac and PC) experience required. Requires the ability to write HTML code, and to write and edit javascript. Dreamweaver and Photoshop or equivalent experience preferred. Requires excellent communication skills (oral, written, listening, presentation) and organization skills. This includes client/server and mainframe computing utilizing Unix and MVS operating systems, the World-Wide Web and programs and scripts written in COBOL, Natural, C, C++, Java, Javascript, HTML and PERL. MIS is one of several groups within the larger organization of Information Technologies (IT). Academic and Administrative units across campus rely on MIS for the provision of business system design and support services.

The Web Developer family supports campus business processes by participating in the needs analysis, specification, acquisition, design, development and maintenance of Web-based information services. They report to the Associate Director or Manager, MIS. The Web Developer family includes a progression of five steps from entry level (Web Developer I) to the most senior level (Project Leader II). New members to the Web Developer family will be hired into levels that are commensurate with their experience and educational background.
